Abdominal Ultrasound

How to Prepare for an Abdominal Ultrasound

Patients must go without food and drink for six hours prior to an abdominal study. 
Necessary medications may be taken with a small amount of water only.

Pelvic Ultrasound

How to Prepare for a Pelvic Ultrasound

Patients must drink at least one litre of clear fluid 1-2 hours prior to the examination and not empty their bladder prior to the procedure.

Renal Ultrasound

Preparation

Generally, no prior preparation is required. Just wear loose fitting clothing to allow access to the upper abdomen. 

Thyroid Ultrasound

Preparation

There is no special preparation for this test. Patients should wear suitable clothing to allow access to their neck. No other preparation is required.

Scrotal Ultrasound

Preparation

Patients should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for their ultrasound exam. They will need to remove all clothing from the area to be examined. No other preparation is required.

Carotid Doppler Ultrasound

Preparation

There is no special preparation for this test. Patients should wear suitable clothing to allow access to their neck. They will need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area to be examined. 

Venous Doppler

Preparation

The patient should wear loose clothing; the leg veins will be examined from the groin to the calf. No other preparation is required.
