A thyroid ultrasound is an imaging method which uses sound waves to examine the thyroid gland.
There is no special preparation for this test. Just wear suitable clothing to allow access to your neck. You may need to remove all clothing and jewelry in the area. No other preparation is required.
What will happen during the procedure?
You will lie on an examination couch with your head back and neck extended. The Radiologist will place water-soluble gel onto your neck and then move the transducer over your neck until the area has been examined and the desired images have been captured.
What will I experience during the procedure?
There is usually no discomfort associated with the transducer being moved over the area to be examined.
Once the imaging is complete, the clear ultrasound gel will be wiped off your skin. Any residual gel will dry to a powder. The ultrasound gel does not stain or discolour clothing.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure should be complete within 15-20mins. After an ultrasound examination, you should be able to resume your normal activities immediately.
When will I get my results?
Within 2 hours of your examination a copy of your results will be faxed to your doctor followed by a copy in the post.
